The ink of gravure printing mainly consists of three elements:
1. Pigment (used as colorant)
2. Resin (adhering the pigment to the film)
3. Solvent (By distributing or dissolving the pigment and resin, make liquid that is adhesive enough for printing. The solvent, not necessary after printing, is evaporated from the printed surface.)
Conventionally, organic solvents have been used because they dissolve pigment and resin well and are quick-drying. Toho Packaging uses “Water and (partially, 20-30%) alcohol” as a solvent instead of organic alternatives, promoting “Water-based Gravure Printing” which excels not only in quality but also safety and environmental consciousness.
